Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, rising to 4,566 meters and located within Arusha National Park. Often overshadowed by Mount Kilimanjaro, Meru offers dramatic landscapes, rich wildlife, and a challenging yet rewarding trekking experience.
The mountain is an excellent acclimatization climb for Kilimanjaro and is valued for its scenic beauty, diverse ecosystems, and fewer crowds. Treks pass through forests, alpine meadows, and volcanic terrain.
June–October and January–February
The dry season provides safer trekking conditions, clearer views, and more stable weather patterns.
The wet season brings rainfall and mist, making trails more challenging but landscapes greener and quieter.
Wildlife is commonly encountered on the lower slopes of Mount Meru, including giraffes, buffalo, warthogs, colobus monkeys, and antelope species.
Birdlife is abundant in the forest zones, while higher altitudes are dominated by unique vegetation rather than animal life.
