Mahale Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most remote and spectacular protected areas, located along the shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. The park is dominated by the forested Mahale mountain range, rising dramatically from the lake and creating a stunning backdrop.
Mahale is famous for its large population of wild chimpanzees and pristine forest ecosystems. Accessible only by boat or light aircraft, the park offers a true wilderness experience combining primate tracking, forest hiking, and lakeside relaxation.
June–October
The dry season offers ideal conditions for chimpanzee tracking and forest hiking, with reduced rainfall and more accessible trails.
The wet season results in dense vegetation and dramatic forest scenery, but trekking can be challenging due to rain.
Chimpanzees are the star attraction in Mahale Mountains National Park, with multiple habituated groups available for tracking. Other primates include red colobus monkeys and various forest species.
Wildlife also includes forest antelope, bush pigs, and rich birdlife. The focus of wildlife experiences is on primates and forest biodiversity rather than classic savannah species.
Mahale Mountains National Park features dense rainforests, towering peaks, clear mountain streams, and sandy beaches along Lake Tanganyika. The park’s isolation has preserved its ecosystems in near-pristine condition.
The combination of forest, mountains, and lake makes Mahale one of Africa’s most unique national parks.
